Update On IRS Provides Tax Relief To Victims of Hurricane Isaac

UPDATE: The following counties in Mississippi are now considered disaster areas and may qualify for tax relief from the IRS: Adams, Amite, Clarke, Forrest, George, Hancock, Harrison, Hinds, Jackson, Lincoln, Marion, Pearl River, Pike, Stone, Walthall, Warren and Wilkinson.

Last week, we discussed how victims of Hurricane Isaac in Louisiana may qualify for tax relief from the IRS. The IRS has added areas of Mississippi to the list of qualified taxpayers, who are eligible to receive tax relief.

Covered Disaster Areas In Mississippi

The President declared the counties of Adams, Amite, Clarke, Forrest, George, Hancock, Harrison, Hinds, Jackson, Lincoln, Marion, Pearl River, Pike, Stone, Walthall, Warren and Wilkinson a federal disaster area. Individuals who have a business or reside in these areas may qualify for tax relief. The President’s declaration permits the IRS to postpone certain deadlines for taxpayers who reside or have a business in the disaster areas.

  • Deadlines falling on or after August 26, 2012, and on or before January 11, 2013, have been postponed until January 11, 2013.
    • This includes quarterly estimated tax payments that are due on September 17, 2012.
  • The IRs is also waiving the failure-to-deposit penalties for employment and excise tax deposits due on or after August 26, 2012, and on or before September 10, 2012. This is as long as the deposits are made by September 10, 2012.
