I'm trying to prepare an amended return. What do I enter in the Exemptions section if I filed Form 1040EZ?
Exemptions Boxes
If your original return was Form 1040EZ, you will need to look at line 5 of your return to determine the amounts to enter in the Exemptions boxes.
Are the boxes checked for You and Spouse?
- Yes: Enter 0 or leave all of the exemption boxes blank.
- No: What is your filing status?
- If Single, enter 1 in the field for Yourself and spouse. Leave the other 3 boxes blank.
- If Married Filing Jointly, enter 2 in the field for Yourself and spouse. Leave the other 3 boxes blank.
Deductions for Exemptions
If your original return was Form 1040EZ, you will need to look at line 5 of your return.
Are the boxes checked for You and Spouse?
- Yes: Enter $0 in the field for Deductions for Exemptions
- No: What is your filing status?
- If Single, enter $3,800 in the field for Deductions for Exemptions.
- If Married Filing Jointly, enter $7,600 in the field for Deductions for Exemptions.
