My federal return was rejected. Was my state return sent to my state to be processed?

No.  When you file your federal return and your state return together, the states require that the IRS accept the federal return before they will look at the state return.  This is because any changes that are required for your federal return will oftentimes affect the results of the state return.  So, when your federal return was rejected, your state return did not get transmitted.

If you are having issues getting your federal return accepted, you may want to go ahead and e-file your state return separately as a state-only e-file.  By doing this, your state return will get transmitted to your state without your federal return getting accepted by the IRS.

To file just your state return:

  1. From the Main Menu of your account, click "Send Return Electronically".
  2. On the first page of the e-file process, be sure the check the checkbox that indicates:  DO NOT file my federal return. I only want to file my state return(s). I DO NOT want my federal return to be sent.
  3. Continue through the submit process until you get the confirmation that your return was sent successfully.
