Hospital visit inspires win for driver Regan Smith

Regan Smith, driver of the No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro for JR Motorsports, made his first visit last week to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where 10-year-old Laynie Roll and her specially-baked cookies inspired his win Saturday.

Laynie suffers from a neurological disease that causes uncontrollable contractions of her muscles. She has been part of the NCH program for nine years.

Smith’s visit with Laynie and the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit helped the driver win the Nationwide Children’s Hospital 200, as Laynie predicted.

“You realize what they’re going through, but obviously you can’t put yourself in their situations,” Smith said. “They’re kids, little kids, who really don’t deserve to go through some of the things that they do. We all know that they have a lot more going on than any of us can imagine, so we want them to come out and smile and have them be excited, have them enjoy the race cars, (and) have them forget whatever it is that they have going on even if it’s for 20 minutes, 10 minutes or two hours.”
