As it is over halfway through Movember, you may have noticed a handful of friends or co-workers taking part in the mustache movement. So while some of the mustaches may look absolutely ridiculous, know that like the pink ribbon is to breast cancer awareness, these mustaches have become the symbol of men’s health. Learn how the Movember Foundation is “changing the face of men’s health” and how your participation in the movement can help below.
What’s Movember Really About?
The average life expectancy for men in the United Sates is almost 5 years less than women. The Movember Foundation aims to change the reasons for the poor state of men’s health by putting a fun twist on this serious issue. Using the mustache as a catalyst, the idea is to bring about change and give men the opportunity and confidence to learn and talk about their health and take action when needed.
To achieve this, the Movember Foundation challenges men to grow mustaches during Movember (the month formerly known as November) to spark conversation and raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems.
Become A Part: Be A Mo Bro or Mo Sista
It does not matter what gender you are, there are ways for everyone to get involved.
Men (also known as Mo Bros) sign up, grow a mustache for the month and fundraise for men’s health – participation is that simple!
According to the Movember Foundation, women who participate in Movember (called Mo Sistas) are dedicated to supporting the men in their lives by promoting the importance of men’s health. Mo Sistas sign up, start a team, and fundraise – they do everything Mo Bros do, they just don’t grow a Mo! Mo Sistas are champions of Movember, rallying the men in their lives to join the movement, grow mustaches and have important conversations about men’s health.
