University of Georgia and Penn State returning to the TaxSlayer Bowl for Jan. 2 matchup
The Georgia Bulldogs and Penn State Nittany Lions have been selected as the two elite college football teams to play in the 71st annual TaxSlayer Bowl on Jan. 2.
“We couldn’t be more excited to have Georgia and Penn State play in the 2016 TaxSlayer Bowl,” said TaxSlayer President Jimmy Rhodes. “We know the competitive matchup will be a highlight for college football fans traveling to Jacksonville and watching from home. There’s no better way to kickoff tax season than with a great American tradition.”
The announcement was made Sunday afternoon by Heather Duncan, chairwoman of the TaxSlayer Bowl, following selection of the top four teams playing in the second annual College Football Playoffs.
“Both Georgia and Penn State have storied football programs with fantastic fan bases,” said Duncan. “We are thrilled to host these two top-notch teams and their players, coaches and fans in Jacksonville for a great day of football.”
Georgia played in the 2014 TaxSlayer Bowl and three other TaxSlayer Bowl games. It finished the regular season with a 9-3 record.
The Nittany Lions, coached by James Franklin, finished their season with a 7-5 record. They are making their fifth appearance in the TaxSlayer Bowl. The only time they faced Georgia was in the Sugar Bowl concluding the 1982 season. Penn State defeated Georgia 27-23 to win the National Championship.
