New Jersey Domestic Partnership Exemption

If you were a member of the a domestic partnership that was registered in New Jersey on the last day of the tax year, you may claim an exemption for your domestic partner only if he or she does not file a New Jersey income tax return.

You must enclose a copy of your New Jersey Certificate of Domestic Partnership the first time you claim the exemption, and you may be asked to provide additional information at a later date.

If you are claiming this exemption, select YES within the basic information section of the state return, and the program will do the rest.

Please note: This exemption would only apply if you are not claiming the spouses exemption on your federal return.
