Making the Switch to Online Tax Filing

Woman filing her tax return online with TaxSlayer

Online tax filing, also known as e-filing, allows taxpayers to submit tax returns electronically. E-filing prevents you from having to meet with a tax preparer, fill out a paper return, mail in your return, etc. Instead, you can prepare your own return anytime, anywhere and file with the click of a button.

If you’re ready to take control of your taxes and e-file your return, we’ve covered the basics to get you started.

How does online tax filing work?

When you file with TaxSlayer, you can use any device that has internet access. You don’t have to download or purchase software to insert into your device. You simply create a free account and log in at (or through our mobile app) with the device of your choosing – computer, tablet, smartphone, etc.

TaxSlayer walks you through preparing and submitting your return from start to finish. You get to choose how much guidance you want, which we’ll explain more later. Your information is saved as you go, so your progress is never lost, and you can leave and come back if needed.

What do I need to get started?

If you don’t know where to start when gathering your forms and records, check out our tax prep checklist to help you organize everything you need.

It’s important to have a good recordkeeping system to keep track of your tax-related documents year after year. For more information, read The Best Way to Organize Receipts and Records for Tax Time

What if I don’t know much about taxes?

TaxSlayer is designed for everyone to use. No tax knowledge necessary. You have the option to be guided through every step of your return. You’ll answer questions about your tax situation, and we’ll make sure to find you every possible tax break along the way.

On the other hand, if you know the income you need to enter and the tax breaks you qualify for, you can navigate the program and enter your information on your own.

What happens when I’m done with my return?

Once you submit your return, we’ll electronically send it to the IRS. Next, the IRS will review your return, which can take up to 48 hours. If your personal information matches their records, your return should be accepted. If you’re due a refund, you’ll typically receive it within 21 days of your return being accepted.

If your return is rejected, you can make changes and file an amended return. We’ll keep you updated on the status of your return in your TaxSlayer account and provide next steps if needed. For more, read What Happens After I File My Taxes?

How will the IRS send me my refund?

Before you e-file, you’ll select a refund delivery method. Direct deposit is the fastest method. You can track your refund with this IRS refund tool

Are my taxes too complicated to file myself?

Nope – TaxSlayer covers all possible tax situations. Plus, you can get any type of support you want. Everyone who files with TaxSlayer has access to unlimited phone and email support. If you want more help, we have live chat and access to tax experts with Ask a Tax Pro.
